Current Event

My current event article this week is about a women running over people at a parade. I got my article, “Driver Adacia Chambers faces murder charges in Oklahoma State crash”, from cnn.com My article talks about how
Adacia Chambers plowed her car into a crowd of people at the Oklahoma State University homecoming parade. She killed a toddler, a graduate student and a couple who’d worked at the school for a long time. She also injured dozens of people, 11 of these younger than 13, including a 1 year old, a 3 year old and four 6 year olds. Out of the 47 people treated after the crash, 17 remained hospitalized and four were in critical condition Sunday.
Adacia Chambers is being held in jail on four counts of second degree murder. She is set to go to court on Monday. Although this event didn’t happen to anybody I know, or to me, it still affects me. We have homecoming parades and Christmas parades all the time in East Texas and this could most definitely happen around here in Texas. This affects the world because there were lots of family’s hurt in this.

Current Event

My current event article is about the hit and run in Nacadoches. I found my article on KTRE.com
My article is called “Nacogdoches PD officers arrest driver in hit-and-run Saturday”
In my article it talks about how the police have arrested a 20 year old man for the connection in a Nacogdoches hit and run that seriously injured a 16 year old boy. Christian Michael Gill is still being held in the county jail on a third degree felony charge. his bail amount has been set at $7,500. Brandon Gipson, the injured 16 year old boy was either going to or from school homecoming dance when the accident happened. Tina Woodall, Brandon’s mom has said her son is still in critical condition.
Gipson suffered head trauma and internal bleeding as a result of the accident. He also suffered a broken arm, bruises, and scrapes, However, doctors have said that they are the most concerned about Gipson’s head injuries.
This article relates to me, because a boy that I cheered with last year died in a car accident. I don’t think somebody should run from a serious car accident. This definitely affects my town and the world. Car accidents are a serious deal. It is hard to deal with somebody getting hurt in a car accident.

“When I was first learning to drive as a teenager, it was a completely different experience depending upon whether my father or mother was in the passenger seat. My mother was calm, so I was able to make good decisions. But my father criticized everything I did, so I overthought everything and would end up making mistakes. And that’s what my marriage was like. I based all of my decisions on how my wife would respond. Once we got divorced I moved into a small apartment. And the first morning at my new place, I slept until 11 AM. I hadn’t done that in years. And it felt great.

This is my favorite one, because my mom can’t drive to save her life.. And when she was teaching my brother to drive she wasn’t calm at all. This is the very opposite from me. It also sort of relates to me because I sleep in everyday and this dude slept it and liked it.

News Writing Practice 1

An emergency school board meeting being held, due to a hole in the district’s computer service will decided the fate of the school’s journalism department. The board will be discussing if they should rent computers for the journalism staff.

The yearbook class has a 48-page final deadline on February 27th. The district is allowing the yearbook advisor to download the information that is needed for the deadline before the system was shutdown

“Macworld in Southside agreed to let us rent four Macintosh computer with the necessary software for $500 for three weeks.” Rodney Stephens, yearbook advisor said. “That’s an Incredibly discounted price and much cheaper than what our yearbook company would charge us for a missed deadline.”

Some students aren’t as worried about the deadline as others.

“This year we pushed our final yearbook deadline back as far as we could to add more coverage to the book” Alexis Zavia, editor of the yearbook said. “In fact, before this computer hacking problem, we were ahead of schedule.

Although the school is upset about the shutdown, they are also moving quickly to fix the issue.

“I don’t think it was a student. This is some pretty sophisticated hacking.” Ed Robles, district technology director said. “We understand the inconvenience of the shut down, but it’s necessary.”

The schoo’ls annual yearbook signing is a big tradition that the seniors would not want to miss.

“We have to get our yearbooks before school is out.” Reggie white, senior, said. “Yearbook day is one of the highlights of senior year.”

Current Event Assignment

My current event assignment this week is about the concussions in high school. I found my article on http://www.cnn.com/2013/10/31/health/athletes-concussions/
The title of my article is “High school athletes found more vulnerable to concussions
My article talks about the number of concussion injurys getting higher, and how there a more steps you have to go through in order to return to play sports. Study’s show that concussions in younger kids are higher than in high school students. In addition, it also says that they believe younger students will be more willing to report symptoms, because high school students don’t want to have to sit out and they have a “culture of resistance” It also talks about how this is very dangerous and leads to more dangerous concussions in the future. Our generation is going to have lots of health problems because of this. This event affects me because it involves my generation and all my friends. Most of my friends play sports and would rather play with a concussion than sit out. This affects the world because it is happening to kids all around us.
